Strong Thunderstorms Prompt Marine Warning for Grand Strand Coastal Waters

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, has issued a Marine Weather Statement warning mariners of strong thunderstorms moving across local and offshore coastal waters on Wednesday morning, August 5, 2026.

Radar detected a line of strong thunderstorms at 7:40 AM EDT extending from near Wr4 to approximately 12 nautical miles southeast of the Sunset Mid Shelf Buoy. The storm system is traveling southeast at 25 knots and is expected to affect marine areas through at least 9:15 AM EDT.

The affected zones encompass coastal waters stretching from Surf City, North Carolina, down to Little River Inlet, South Carolina, out 20 nautical miles, as well as offshore waters from Little River Inlet south to the South Santee River from 20 to 60 nautical miles out.

Boaters, commercial mariners, and recreational anglers operating along the Grand Strand and surrounding waters will face hazardous conditions. The storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 30 knots, locally elevated waves, frequent lightning, and potential waterspouts.

Mariners are advised to seek safe harbor immediately and remain docked until the storm line passes. Those caught on open water should prepare for quickly deteriorating marine conditions by securing loose equipment and ensuring all passengers and crew are wearing properly fitted life jackets. The National Weather Service notes that a Special Marine Warning may be issued if storm conditions intensify.
