Heat Advisory issued for Grand Strand as severe heat index peaks through Friday

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory across the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions, with dangerous heat and extreme humidity expected to peak on Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. Forecasters warn that portions of the advisory area could be upgraded to Excessive Heat Warnings on Friday as condition details develop.

On Thursday afternoon, actual temperatures will reach the lower 90s along the beaches and the mid-90s inland. However, extreme humidity levels will push the heat index between 105 and 110 degrees from midday through the late afternoon hours. Dry conditions are expected to prevail across most of the region, with only a very slim chance of an isolated thunderstorm.

Friday is forecast to be the most intense day of the current heat wave. Beach communities will see temperatures in the lower to mid-90s, while inland areas could see actual readings in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. High humidity along the coast will push the heat index above 110 degrees, with localized areas potentially experiencing heat indices up to 115 degrees.

The extreme weather impacts residents, outdoor workers, tourists, and commuters across North Myrtle Beach and the surrounding coastal area. Prolonged exposure to high heat indices increases the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Community members are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and ensure vulnerable individuals and pets have access to adequate shade and air conditioning.

Slight relief is anticipated over the weekend as a weak cold front moves through the area. Scattered afternoon thunderstorms on Saturday will help ease the heat, though Saturday high temperatures will still remain in the lower to mid-90s with a heat index near 105 degrees. Temperatures are expected to cool further into the upper 80s and lower 90s by Sunday.
