Gale Warning and Small Craft Advisory Issued for Grand Strand Coastal Waters

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, has issued a Gale Warning for local coastal waters, which will remain in effect until 2:00 AM EDT on Monday, October 19. Following the expiration of the Gale Warning, a Small Craft Advisory will take effect from 2:00 AM Monday until 8:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, October 21.

The advisories cover coastal waters out 20 nautical miles, stretching from Surf City, North Carolina, down to Little River Inlet, South Carolina. This area encompasses key offshore marine routes used by commercial vessels, recreational boaters, and local mariners operating out of northern Grand Strand ports.

During the Gale Warning period, forecasters expect strong north winds ranging from 20 to 30 knots, with gusts reaching up to 35 knots. These high winds will generate rough seas built up to 7 to 10 feet. Hazardous marine conditions will continue into the week under the Small Craft Advisory, maintaining persistent north winds of 20 to 30 knots and elevated seas of 7 to 10 feet.

Strong winds and heavy seas pose significant risks to all watercraft. Hazardous sea conditions can capsize or severely damage vessels, while spray and high wave action will substantially reduce visibility on the water.

Mariners and boat owners in the Little River area and surrounding waters are advised to alter their plans to avoid these dangerous conditions. Severe weather protocols recommend remaining in port, seeking safe harbor, altering planned offshore courses, and ensuring all vessels are securely moored until conditions improve on Wednesday morning.
