High temperatures near the coast are expected to reach the lower 90s, while inland communities will see temperatures climb into the middle 90s. High humidity levels will cause the heat index—how hot it feels when humidity is combined with the actual air temperature—to range between 105 and 110 degrees in advised areas. Across the Pee Dee region, heat index values are projected to reach 104 to 107 degrees.
Conditions are expected to worsen on Friday, which will likely be the most intense day of the current heat wave. Actual air temperatures will hit the lower to middle 90s near the beaches, while inland areas could reach the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. High moisture levels will send heat index values over 110 degrees near the coast, with some locations potentially seeing feel-like temperatures up to 115 degrees. Most areas will remain dry despite the heavy humidity, though a stray afternoon thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out.
Slight relief is forecast to arrive over the weekend as a weak cold front moves into coastal South Carolina. The front will bring partly cloudy morning skies followed by scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms on Saturday. Beach temperatures on Saturday are expected to stay in the upper 80s and lower 90s, while inland highs will reach the mid-90s before rain begins. Heat index values on Saturday should peak between 100 and 105 degrees.
A few additional afternoon storms remain possible on Sunday. Residents, outdoor workers, visitors, and pet owners are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay properly hydrated, and monitor local weather updates.
