Strong Thunderstorms Warning Issued for Grand Strand Coastal Waters

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, has issued a marine weather statement tracking strong thunderstorms over local coastal waters. The affected area includes coastal waters stretching from Cape Fear to Little River Inlet out 20 nautical miles, from Surf City to Cape Fear out 20 nautical miles, and offshore waters from Surf City to Little River Inlet extending from 20 to 60 nautical miles.

Doppler radar detected a line of strong thunderstorms moving east at 30 knots. These storms are capable of producing gusty winds up to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and intense lightning strikes as they move across coastal locations and offshore wreck sites.

Mariners, commercial fishermen, and recreational boaters operating in or near Little River Inlet and surrounding waters should take immediate safety precautions. Forecasters advise that these storms pose serious hazards to small craft and that a special marine warning may be required if conditions worsen near the shoreline.

Boaters are strongly encouraged to seek safe harbor immediately and consider heading for shore until the line of storms passes. Anyone caught on open water should prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions, ensure all passengers are wearing properly fitted life jackets, stay below deck if possible, and remain clear of ungrounded metal objects.
