South Paw Rescue Secures First Permanent Building in Surfside Beach

South Paw Rescue has secured its first permanent facility in Surfside Beach, marking a major milestone for the local animal welfare group. Supported by community donations, the organization is converting the new space into an adoption center and community hub, with plans to officially open the doors in September 2026 to coincide with its second anniversary.

For nearly two years since its founding, the rescue operated entirely through a network of volunteers working out of their private homes. The new physical site will consolidate operations and allow the organization to expand its outreach and animal care capabilities across the Grand Strand.

Co-Director Betty Budd explained that the building will serve multiple everyday functions for pet owners and local residents. Beyond housing administrative offices and serve as a central location to drop off physical donations, the site will feature an adoption center, a community pet pantry, and an outdoor microchip scanner accessible to anyone who finds a stray animal in the area.

The expansion comes at a critical time for local animal welfare efforts. Organization leadership noted that Horry County and the broader region continue to face high numbers of stray animals, putting heavy stress on regional shelters and independent rescue networks. The dedicated physical footprint in Surfside Beach is expected to help relieve some of this pressure by increasing local foster, adoption, and support services.

Co-Director Sofia Bobi highlighted that having a permanent space will allow the rescue to help significantly more animals while offering practical resources directly to the neighborhood.
