Construction is underway on a South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) safety project installing concrete medians along U.S. 17 in North Myrtle Beach. The state-managed project aims to curb severe crashes along the corridor from Conway Street to 21st Avenue South, where officials recorded 609 crashes and seven fatalities over a six-year period. The raised concrete medians will restrict traditional left turns, requiring motorists to use designated U-turn locations to reach businesses and side streets along the route.

Funding for the safety upgrades comes through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program and is managed by SCDOT's Office of Traffic Safety.
