Planning Commission to Review Amazon Drone Launch Site Proposal Oct. 20
The North Myrtle Beach Planning Commission is scheduled to review a land-use amendment for a proposed Amazon drone delivery launch pad on October 20, 2026.

Why this matters locally
The land-use decision determines whether Amazon can convert existing pavement at its Water Tower Road facility for drone operations, while giving local residents a formal window to submit public comments to city leaders.
The North Myrtle Beach Planning Commission is expected to consider a proposal from Amazon on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, to allow a fenced drone delivery launch pad behind its distribution facility at 8651 Water Tower Road.
Amazon is requesting a minor amendment to the Parkway Group Planned Development District (PDD) to place the facility on existing pavement. According to city records, the project will not increase impervious surfaces, and the facility will retain sufficient parking to meet city requirements. The proposed launch pad site is located roughly 1,400 feet from the nearest residential areas, separated by Highway 31.
The upcoming consideration follows previous postponements at the Planning Commission's September 22 and October 6 meetings, as well as a public workshop held on October 7. The City emphasizes that the Planning Commission is tasked solely with reviewing land-use and site changes. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations separately govern aviation safety, flight paths, airspace use, and altitudes, with the South Carolina Flight Standards District Office reviewing Amazon's aviation application. City approval of the land-use amendment would not automatically authorize flights, nor would a denial create a citywide ban on drones.
Residents will have two opportunities to attend meetings regarding the proposal on Tuesday, October 20, at City Hall, located at 1018 2nd Avenue South:
- **9:15 AM Workshop:** Held in the Planning & Development Conference Room for public observation.
- **5:00 PM Regular Meeting:** Held in Council Chambers, where public comments will be accepted when the item is opened.
City officials encourage residents to review the City's online Agenda Center for final agendas and presentation documents, which include Amazon's proposed 7.5-mile operating area map, no-fly zone outlines, and staff presentations. Amazon has also indicated plans to hold a separate community engagement meeting this fall featuring digital and written surveys.
Community members with questions or comments can reach City Planning Staff at planning@nmb.us, the FAA at UASHelp@faa.gov (1-844-359-6982), or Amazon Customer Service at 1-888-280-4331.
