North Myrtle Beach High Football Considers Two-Quarterback Setup for 2026 Season

The North Myrtle Beach High School Chiefs football team may rely on a two-quarterback approach as they enter the 2026 season under returning head coach Perry Woolbright. Following a 3-8 season last year, the Chiefs are shifting from a heavy rushing attack to a dynamic shotgun spread scheme with more passing and run-pass option choices. Coach Woolbright is evaluating sophomore quarterbacks Evan Barrett and Mason Walker to share duties under center.

Both Barrett and Walker bring varsity experience from their freshman season in 2025. Last year, Walker was brought in during clear passing situations while Barrett's season was shortened due to an early injury against Goose Creek. Coach Woolbright has previously rotated quarterbacks during his coaching career and noted that both sophomores are performing well, executing plays effectively, and giving the team a solid chance for success on the field.

During preseason practices and multi-team scrimmages against opponents like South Columbus, Aynor, Wando, Waccamaw, and Porter-Gaud, the team has alternated the two quarterbacks on alternating offensive series. Coach Woolbright indicated that this rotation will continue through upcoming scrimmages and likely extend into the start of the regular season as the coaching staff evaluates their execution and toughness.

Local football fans and community supporters can get their first look at the team's new offensive system during upcoming games. The Chiefs will participate in the Kickoff Classic against Carolina Forest this Friday before opening their official 2026 regular season at home against Socastee on Friday, August 21, 2026.
