Horry County Students Set to Return to School on August 19

Horry County students will return to the classroom on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, marking the official end of the peak summer weekday period for local families and businesses. The Aug. 19 return makes Horry County Schools the latest district to start classes in South Carolina.

While teachers reported back on Aug. 10 for pre-school in-service training, students begin their academic year mid-week. The 2026–27 school calendar will run through June 8, 2027, which is also set to be the latest closing date among South Carolina's 73 school districts. Interim reports for the first marking period will be issued on Sept. 18, followed by first report cards on Oct. 29.

Under South Carolina state law (S.C. Code § 59-1-425), public schools are mandated not to open before the third Monday in August unless they adopt a modified year-round calendar. While a majority of districts across the state operate on a modified schedule—allowing them to return in late July or early August—Horry County continues to adhere to the traditional statutory timeline.

The return to school will noticeably alter local morning and afternoon road conditions across the Grand Strand. Drivers are reminded that passing a stopped school bus is a serious misdemeanor in South Carolina, carrying fines starting at $500 or up to 30 days in jail for a first offense. Because school-zone speed limits are established and posted site-by-site locally rather than set at a uniform statewide number, motorists should pay close attention to posted signs near school campuses.

The schedule shift also signals the start of the late-summer transition for the Grand Strand economy. Although weekday family beach trips wind down, ocean temperatures remain high—averaging nearly 84 degrees at the Springmaid Pier gauge in mid-August—and the fall event season begins shortly after, featuring golf tournaments, community festivals, and seasonal rallies throughout the region.
