North Myrtle Beach Tree Board Oversees Urban Canopy and Community Planting Programs

The North Myrtle Beach Tree Board manages public trees throughout the city and advises local officials on urban forestry matters. Established in 2005, the board focuses on the care and protection of public trees, with special attention given to heritage trees that measure 24 inches or greater in diameter. Thanks to these ongoing efforts, North Myrtle Beach has maintained its status as a recognized Tree City USA community through the National Arbor Day Foundation since 2006.

The volunteer board hosts annual Arbor Day celebrations, recognizes Earth Day, and sponsors educational tree events for residents throughout the year. The group consists of community members Jimmy Meacci, Babs Johnston, Jay Keeter, Alan Faulkenberry, and Bryan "Travis" Yates. City ex-officio staff supporting the board include Public Grounds Superintendent Jim Grainger, Senior Planner and Urban Designer Suzanne Pritchard, and Crew Leaders Jarrett Lewis and Bernie Lowe.

Residents can participate in local urban forestry initiatives through several public programs:

Tree of the Month Recognition: Residents who know of an exceptional tree within city limits—whether notable for its size, beauty, or unique characteristics—can submit it to the Tree Board for potential recognition as the city's "Tree of the Month."

Public Tree Planting Donation Program: Community members can honor or memorialize a loved one through a $150 contribution to the North Myrtle Beach Tree Bank. This donation covers the planting of a tree on public property. The city's Parks and Public Grounds team evaluates and selects the optimal planting location for each donated tree.

Once a donated tree is installed, the honored individual's name is added to an artistic leaf on the official Tree Mural displayed at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center.
