Conway Implements Downtown Pedestrian Safety Closures for City of Halloween

City officials in Conway are introducing new pedestrian safety measures downtown ahead of the official kick-off for the City of Halloween festivities on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Local leaders noted that large crowds have already been gathering in the area in the weeks leading up to the seasonal event.

To protect visitors navigating the downtown core, the city is implementing major road closures to create designated walking zones. Conway Chief of Police Dale Long confirmed that a significant section of Laurel Street and Second Avenue will be completely closed to vehicular traffic, turning the core area where main activities take place into a 100 percent pedestrian zone. This marks the first year the city has enacted this specific street closure setup.

Police officials are urging parents and visitors to stay alert, even within the secure areas. Chief Long highlighted that people often become distracted by seasonal decorations, such as looking up at the decorated trees and pumpkins, which can lead to reduced situational awareness. Safety officials caution that if pedestrians step outside the designated closed zones, they will immediately contend with active vehicle traffic. Parents are specifically advised to keep close supervision over children at all times.

To support the safety plan, the city is increasing police presence throughout the event area to manage the anticipated crowds. Additionally, the Conway Fire Department will be on standby downtown to respond quickly to any medical needs or emergencies that arise during the festivities.
