Coastal Carolina Football Opens 2026 Season on Sept. 5 Under New Head Coach

Coastal Carolina University will kickoff its 2026 college football season on Saturday, Sept. 5, on the road against West Virginia. The game marks the official head coaching debut of Ryan Beard, who was hired in December 2025 following the departure of former head coach Tim Beck.

The 2026 campaign represents a major transition for the Chanticleers, featuring a roster reshaped by more than 50 new additions through the transfer portal, junior college signings, and high school recruits. Head coaches in the Sun Belt Conference voted Coastal Carolina fifth in the seven-team East Division, while oddsmakers have set the team's regular-season win total expectation at 4.5 games.

Key positions remain under evaluation heading into the opener. The Chanticleers are sorting through an open quarterback competition that includes Missouri State transfer Deuce Bailey, Arkansas transfer Trever Jackson, Tyler Junior College transfer Tre Guerra, and freshman Osiris Lopez.

On defense, Coastal Carolina brings back key experience in its back seven. Defensive corner Ja’Marion Wayne earned Preseason First-Team All-Sun Belt honors, while linebacker Tray Brown and defensive back Myles Woods were named to the preseason second team along with returning linebacker Se’Von McDowell.

The outcome of the season carries direct local significance beyond the field. Saturdays at Brooks Stadium in Conway serve as a primary economic driver for Horry County, filling local hotels, restaurants, and retail spots across Conway and Myrtle Beach across seven home dates. To maintain fan engagement and attendance, the university is continuing its Kickoff Meal Deal for 2026, offering ticketed fans free hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, and fountain drinks through the end of the third quarter.

Following the Sept. 5 opener at West Virginia, Coastal Carolina returns to Conway for its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12, against Fordham. That evening's event at Brooks Stadium will feature a three-part drone show, a stadium-wide "white out," and free concessions for ticket holders. Additional home non-conference opponents this fall include Liberty.
